Whether you live locally or are passing through, be sure
to drop in at the Kango Wijnhuis in Van der Riet Street,
Oudtshoorn, to sample our extensive award-winning range
of wine, fortified wine, brandy, liqueur and witblits.
Built in the traditional Klein Karoo style, the Wijnhuis
has a generous, sunny stoep where you can contemplate
your options – unhurriedly – before making
a selection at the shop. During December, you can enjoy
a scrumptious cheese platter (R50 per plate) along with
your glass of wine. The garden has plenty of space for
the children to let off steam too.
Francois Ferreira, celebrity chef and head of the Eden
Culinary School of Excellence, is one local resident
for whom a Friday afternoon stopover at the Wijnhuis
is a popular way to start the weekend...
You can, of course, purchase any of the products from
the Kango Wines range on-site. The shop further stocks
a selection of top quality traditional products true
to the Klein Karoo, including Triple traditional rusks
and homemade green fig preserve from De Rust.
We are proud to also offer a range of gift cards, calendars
and fridge magnets by talented Stellenbosch artist Frans
Groenewald. His quirky and humorous take on one of the
big pleasures in life – wine – has earned
him a loyal following and an international reputation.
The Kango Wijnhuis is the only place in Oudtshoorn
where you can regularly take your pick of the finest
of fresh farm produce, as well as local arts and crafts.
Held on the last Saturday of each month, the market
is not to be missed – as much for the fine selection
of homemade or homegrown local goods as for the convivial
atmosphere.
The Kango Wijnhuis is more than just a tasting centre
and shop. We have put a lot of thought into designing
a modern, stylish and comfortable venue that is well-equipped
and accessible to people of all abilities. It’s
the ideal venue for your wedding reception, year-end
party or conference.
The venue seats 60 people inside, while many more can
be accommodated on the stoep and on the lawn (under
umbrellas, if required). You can also arrange to use
our indoor braai, kitchen, glassware, cutlery and crockery.
Whether you are hosting a conference, wedding or other
private function, we will do our best to accommodate
your needs and to meet even unusual requests.
Tours of the cellar at Park Road South can be arranged
by appointment and, if you are lucky, you could also
view the rolling of chewing tobacco by hand in the small
tobacco factory.
